We believe that it is important and proper for our clients to understand the basis of our charges for the services we provide. Most legal work is billed to our clients on the basis of time expended. An hourly rate of compensation is quoted at the initial conference. This rate is determined by the attorney after considering the complexity of the representation, the amount in controversy, and other factors. We also take into consideration any time deadlines imposed by our client or by the circumstance of a particular case, as well as the likelihood that the acceptance of a particular case may preclude our firm from being engaged in another matter. In other cases, we may be able to quote a fixed fee for standardized services such as the formation of a simple corporation or the defense of a traffic matter. Our firm follows a customary practice of requesting an advance fee payment at the initial stages of a new matter. The advance fee payment is a present fee payable to the attorney for their commitment to perform present and future legal services on the new matter. We may also request a deposit for costs and expenses that are anticipated. For personal injury and workers' compensation cases, our firm undertakes representation of injured parties on a contingent fee basis, because people who have sustained injuries are often unable to work due to their injuries. The client pays for our services only if there is a settlement or verdict in their favor.
